The Greenspace occupies 63.5 percent of the town's area, and 17.4 percent is occupied by the gardens and the domestic buildings. In the year 1995 the shopping centre, Ashton Arcades was opened, covering around 13,000 square metres and having around 40 shops in it. This led to the creation of 500 new job opportunities in the town. The industry of life science has led to the growth in the Greater Manchester. Tameside has many famous parliamentary members as its residents. Like Davis Heyes, Andrew Gwynne, Mr James Purnell and many more. There are two ancient and historic churches in this town one St. Anne's Church and the St. Michael and All Angel's Church.
