Plymouth is a Unitary Authority Area and a city on the coast of Devon, England. It is about one ninety miles south west of London. It is built between the mouths of two rivers, namely: river Plym and river Tamar. The river Plym lies on the east side of Plymouth while the river Tamar is on the west. The two rivers join in Plymouth. Since 1967 the unitary authority of Plymouth has included the suburbs of Plympton and Plymstock, which are on the east side of the River Plym.
Plymouth grew as a major shipping port during the Industrial Revolution, handling imports and passengers from the United States and the construction of ships for the Royal Navy. The County Boroughs of Plymouth and Devonport, and the urban district of East Stonehouse came together to form a single county borough of Plymouth collectively referred to as The Three Towns. The city's naval importance later led to it being targetted and partially destructed during World War II, an act known as the Plymouth Blitz. After the war the city centre was completely rebuilt.
Plymouth was heavily bombed by the Germans during World War II which involved a series of 59 raids known as the Plymouth Blitz. Although the dockyards were the main targets, much of the city centre and over 3,700 houses were completely destroyed and over 1,000 civilians had lost their lives. Most of the shops had been destroyed and those that remained were brought down to enable a zoned reconstruction.
Today, however, the city has completely healed from the destruction of the World War II. It is now home to over 250,000 people, making it the 15th most populated city in England. It has its own city council and is represented nationally by three Ministers of Parliament. Plymouth's economy though is still strongly influenced by shipbuilding, it has become a more service based economy since the 1990s. It has the 11th largest university in the United Kingdom by number of students, the University of Plymouth, and the largest operational naval base in Western Europe; HMNB Devonport. Plymouth has ferry links to France and Spain and an airport with international services.
The City of Plymouth is divided into 20 wards; 17 of which elect three councillors each and the other three electing two councillors each, making up a total of 57 council. Each year a third of the council is up for election for three consecutive years; there are no elections on the following fourth year, which is when County Council elections take place. The total electorate for Plymouth was 183,358 in December 2007. The local election of May 2008 resulted in a political composition of 37 Conservative and 20 Labour. Plymouth has a Lord Mayor, which is elected each year on the third Friday of May by a group of six people.
Plymouth is also a favourite among the tourists and people come from far and wide to experience the night life and
