Cumbernauld and Kilsyth was previosuly one of the nineteen local government districts in the Strathclyde region of Scotland. The district had been formed by the Local Government Act of Scotland in 1973 from parts of the counties of Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire. However, the district was abolished by the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act, 1994. Cumbernauld and Kilsyth is now a constituency of the Scottish Parliament whereas previously it was a constituency of the House of Commons.
Motherwell is the headquarters for both North Lanarkshire Council and of Strathclyde police 'N' division. Motherwell is one of the bigger towns in North lanarkshire and was previously known as the steel capital of Scotland. It lies on the south east fringes of Glasgow. The town was a burg from 1865 to 1920, at which time it was merged with the burg of Wishaw.
Monkland was previosuly one of the nineteen local government districts in the Strathclyde region of Scotland. The district had been formed by the Local Government Act of Scotland in 1973 from parts of the counties of lanarkshire. The district was, however, abolished in 1996 by the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act, 1994. The areas of the district was then combined with Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, Monkland and Motherwell districts and parts of strathkelvin to form the North Lanarkshire Unitary Council.
