During the Industrial Revolution the Gateshead population saw a rapid expansion, especially between the years 1801 and the year 1901, with an increase of 100,000; this resulted in spreading of the major population into the southern parts of the town.
Most of the town's heritage was destroyed by the explosion of 1854 and also damaged the river of Newcastle. The works of locomotives were developed in the year 1831 by the Darlington and the Newcastle Railways. From the year 2000 the council of this borough started the development of regeneration in all the parts of the town, with the ambition of making it a flourishing city. This is the home for the MetroCentre and the European Union.
