Cardiff is built on a marshland on a bed of Triassic stones. The marshland stretches from Chepstow to the Ely estuary, which serves as a natural boundary between Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Cardiff was first given the status of a city in 1905; it then went on to become the capital of Wales in 1955. Cardiff is now part of the Euro cities network of the largest European cities. It is also a major transport hub in Wales and is a major focus for many rail routes and Ariel connections.
Due to the beautiful landscape and healthy transport system Cardiff has become a major tourist destination. It is because of this that many retail shops and chains have sprung up. It is now one of the top ten retail destinations in the United Kingdom. Though the shops are quite widespread in Cardiff, two streets, namely; Queen Street and St Mary Street are the most popular amongst the shoppers. There are also several shopping arcades to pull the crowd amongst which three of them deserve a mention: St David's Centre, Queen's Arcade and the Capitol Centre.
Cardiff has been able to maintain a balance between materialism and naturalism to a great extent. It is therefore quite common to see huge expanses of plush green lands all over the city along with towering buildings and shopping arcades. The lake at Roath Park, including the lighthouse that was erected in the memory of Scott Cardiff is known for its extensive parkland, with parks and other such green areas covering around 10% of the city's total area. Cardiff's main park, known as Bute Park stretches northwards from one of the shopping streets in Cardiff, if combined with the adjacent Llandaff Fields and the Pontcanna Fields it produces a huge open space skirting the river Taff.
Apart from being a beautiful city and a shopper's paradise Cardiff also boasts of a wild night life and lots of adult entertainment. It has everything from a bar, pub, escort service agencies, sex shops, swinger's clubs and massage parlours to strip clubs. Most of these establishments are either situated in Cardiff Bay or in St Mary Street.
